Reflecting on Easter and Springtime

Friday, April 30, 2021

John 11:25-26 (NIV)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

In the UK (and in the Northern Hemisphere generally) we are very fortunate to celebrate Easter in the springtime. There are many visual symbols that we associate with Easter – some are more cultural than Biblical, such as Easter eggs, but they are wonderful opportunities to reflect on the new life Jesus gave us through His sacrifice.

At Bristo Baptist, we had a few different art projects representing different aspects of Easter. There was the cross, probably the most important symbol of Easter, representing Christ's death. For Easter morning, Jeanette added bright flowers to this one, symbolising new life.

Another popular symbol of the new life Jesus gave us is the egg, which the Sunday School used to decorate tree branches to very colourful effect!

There are many lovely flowers and tree blossoms out at the moment in and around Edinburgh. Why not go for an early morning walk and enjoy some quiet worship time, admiring the blooms and the intricate details of God's creation...

Another art project in the church was from Palm Sunday, which combined the thorns of Jesus' crown with the palms used to welcome Him to the city. Palm Sunday and Holy Week leading up to Easter are a very good time to reflect on Jesus' human suffering and sacrifice, before entering into the celebration of His resurrection at Easter.

Some of these elements can also be spotted on a nature walk...

Finding alternative ways of worshipping is even more important at the moment, while we're still restricted in certain areas of our usual worship. We've written about this a few times on the blog before (scroll down for more inspiration!) and we'd love to hear more ideas...!
